Dry Comal Creek, Texas Winery

From a fledgling winery in 1998, Dry  Comal  Creek Vineyards now produces 8,000 cases a year, with expansion plans to produce 12,000.

With only 5 acres of good soil, Dry Comal Creek Vineyards focuses on growing Black Spanish, which is resistant to Pierce’s disease. While we grow only one grape variety, don’t let that fool you.

Dry  Comal  Creek has developed a series of award-winning specialty wines including French  Colombar (Demi-Sweet and Bone Dry), Orange Muscat, White Black Spanish,  Comal  Red, Black Spanish and 1096 Port , each of them spectacular  in their own right and meant to be drinkable now.

With more than 40 albums and countless collaborations to his credit, Taj Mahal is one of the recording industrys most celebrated contemporary blues artists. Now a legendary performer, songwriter, composer, and producer, Taj grew up in Springfield, Massachusetts in a home that cherished sounds from around the globe. Listening to various musical forms, including Caribbean, African, Latin, Cuban, gospel, and jazz, he developed his own distinctive blend of blues and world music. A self-taught musician, Taj plays more than 20 instruments, including the National Steel and Dobro guitars. His remarkable voice, which ranges from gruff and gravelly to smooth and sultry, has been enrapturing audiences for more than 40 years. To date, Taj Mahal has received nine Grammy nominations and two wins. He walked away with the trophy for Best Contemporary Blues Album for Señor Blues (1997) and again for Shoutin’ in Key (2000). Famous for his musical collaborations, Taj has played with innumerable other musicians, everyone from Howlin’ Wolf and Muddy Waters to Sheryl Crow and Eric Clapton. His excitement for music and musicians of all kinds is infectious. Taj’s music resonates as true today as it did in 1969. “From my vantage point,” says the master musician, “my music talks about individuals being responsible for their own happiness. A lot of people think that blues music is gonna bring you down. Well, my music will never do that.”

Friesenhaus Reataurant and Bakery in New Braunfels Texas

This is the beginning of our “American Dream”. Over years we had the idea to immigrate to the United States for almost the same reasons like millions of people before: Searching for a better live for us: Günter and Cornelia Dirks, our sons Peter (20) and Walter (18) and future grandchildren.
It was a family decision to move to United States and after getting our Visa, we bought a one-way-ticket into our new live in March 2005.

We decided that New Braunfels in the beautiful Texas Hill country should be our new  home. Here just in the center of the historic downtown, we opened up our new German Restaurant & Bakery “Friesenhaus” in the old building of former “Krause’s Cafe”.

With our authentic German food, our special events and live entertainment we want to help New Braunfels to keep the German heritage of this beautiful area alive and attract not only the locals but also visitors from all over the states and even abroad.
The name of the restaurant “Friesenhaus” is in mention of the area Friesland, where Günter was born. It lays close to the Dutch border at Germanys North Sea shore. People of this area are called “Friesen” and they are almost as square-headed as Texans are.

Germany is a small country – only half the size of Texas, but the food is as different as the landscape. Many items from Bavaria are well known around the world such as sausages, “Pretzel” or a “mass bier” from the Oktoberfest in Munich, but besides Bavarian dishes, like Weisswurst, Pretzel and Leberkäse, Friesenhaus offer’s a wide variety of fresh cooked food from different German regions such as Berliner Currywurst, Bouletten or Thüringer or Nürnberger sausages (just to name some of them). From Friesland and other coastal areas are marinated herring, Matjes and Rollmops and fish lovers might also enjoy trout or salmon entrees. Other specialties are homemade Sauerbraten or Rouladen with red cabbage and Spätzle, Wiener Schnitzel, pea soup or different kinds of Schnitzel. A delightful addition is Friesenhaus’s own bakery for German bread, “Brötchen” (German rolls) cakes and tarts. You might also enjoy fresh brewed tea selections (black, oolong, green or herb teas) or ice-cream. Friesenhaus wines and sparkling wines are selected from Germanys best wine areas. They range from dry to fruity and the rarities and dessert wines are also a nice gift idea. Fourteen different German beers are available on draft all served in the right glasses. Very popular – the “beerboot”. Last but not least is the souvenir shop at Friesenhaus. You find beer glasses, tea-specialties, Friesenhaus t-shirts, typical Fishermen-shirts, German magazines and more. In 2008 we attached our German Dirndl and Lederhosen section, which includes the traditional blouses, shirts, shoes and socks also.
To immigrate from Germany was a big step in all of our lives. We sold everything we had and left everything behind, but we came to United States with the deeply believe, that we can build a better future here for us and – more importantly – for our children, if we just work hard enough day after day, month after month and year after year. And yes – it’s true ! Here in New Braunfels in the beautiful Texas Hill country we make our own  American dream come true. Of course it wouldn’t be possible without the help of our German-American team and the support of our community. Every day we are so happy do be here. Of course we are proud of our German roots but our future lays here in America – the land of opportunties and freedom. For us America is now our new home. Our next goals are now to franchise our Friesenhaus business to give other people the opportunity to participate on our proven concept. For additional information and any other questions please call Friesenhaus at 830-625-1040 or contact us at info@friesenhausnb.com or – even better – visit us in our Friesenhaus German Restaurant & Bakery downtown New Braunfels, 148 S. Castell Av. We are open 7 days a week for breakfast, lunch and dinner.
